- You must first determine the size of the power transformer to be designed, and then calculate the core AE area by using a formula or experience, and finally determine the type of core.
- It is important to know the position of the transformer in the pcb, otherwise the designed transformer is too large for the PCB, and the power is too low to meet the requirements. If the transformer size is specified by the customer or the outside box is too small, space is insufficient, and a smaller bobbin is required, the transformer can be used as a flying lead wire, which occupy a small space and has a compact layout, but the process is relatively complex. Additionally, it eliminates the need for retaining walls or bushings, which is better for the winding process, and will save both labor and time. The winding and process is relatively simple, and the transformer will be more affordable.
- The bobbin and core of high-frequency power supply transformers must also consider the height and width of the retaining wall. This bobbin must also meet the safety requirements for high-frequency switching power supply transformers. The distributed capacitance of the bobbin should be small in order to avoid reducing the self-resonant frequency of the high-frequency switching power supply.
- Identify the size of the core of a high-frequency transformer according to the corresponding size of the bobbin.
- Choose a horizontal or vertical bobbin based on the size and height of the transformer on your PCB.
- According to the production process and temperature resistance choose the material of the bobbin, such as phenolic, pbt or pet etc.
- According to the winding of the transformer, determine the number of bobbin PINs.
- According to the design of the circuit board, choose a PIN type bobbin or a SMD type bobbin.
